SILAG Warehouse Sales held a large fireworks sale, the biggest in Germany, for the first time at the end of December 2009, to symbolically ring in the 25th year of SILAG Handel AG in 2010. Large quantities of fireworks were purchased for this and a large number of leaflets printed and distributed to all households by post. Class II pyrotechnics (New Year fireworks) may be sold only from 29th to 31st December. To balance out the rush expected according to experience, the business directors decided to move the opening on the night of 28th forward to five minutes past midnight 29th December, a calculated and yet exciting move.
What then happened exceeded all expectations. About 2000 people had gathered in front of the building at exactly midnight to buy fireworks. It was only after 2½ hours that the last waiting customers could be let in.
Thanks to the good organization behind the scenes, the committed work of SILAG’s own ten security staff and the effective support of the police on site, major incidents were avoided. There was a kind of festival atmosphere during the whole fireworks sale. This has led the directorship to repeat the fireworks sale this year.
